On a major renovation, appliance choices should be established early—often before the cabinetry layout is finalized. The dimensions and installation specifications of a refrigerator, cooking range, dishwasher or wall oven influence far more than a single opening in the cabinets.
Dimensions are only the beginning
Designers must account for door swings, handles, ventilation clearances, adjacent drawers, required electrical circuits, water and drain locations, and manufacturer installation specifications. Two appliances advertised at the same nominal width may require different openings and clearances.
Plan ventilation and utility locations early
A cooking appliance can determine where venting is routed. Refrigeration and dishwasher selections affect plumbing and electrical planning. These decisions should be coordinated with qualified licensed professionals before rough-in work.
Specify early; purchase strategically
Identifying actual models early does not always require immediate purchase. Lead times, availability, substitutions and manufacturer specification updates should be reviewed before the cabinetry order is placed.
The most expensive change is often a late one
A seemingly small appliance substitution can create cabinet fit problems or require changes to counters, trim or mechanical work. Confirming appliance selections before final cabinetry documentation reduces avoidable surprises.
